Hi, I’m Ghost — a 6-year-old purebred German Shepherd with a big heart and an even bigger spirit. I may be blind due to glaucoma, but don’t let that fool you — I see the world just fine in my own way. I’m currently thriving in a foster home while I wait for a new seeing eye human and my forever home!

I’m smart as a whip and love to learn. I’m picking up voice commands like “Right,” “Left,” “Careful,” “Step,” “Sniff,” “Touch,” “Outside,” “Kiss,” “Safe,” and “Find It.”  I listen closely (sometimes very  closely — my hearing is top notch!) and I’m eager to please, especially if treats are involved. I’m food motivated but polite in the kitchen — I don’t beg, though I do enjoy supervising meal prep with my nose.

On walks, I’m a great leash partner with a long, confident stride. I love to run and would happily keep pace with an active human. Cold weather? My favorite. I love snowball fights. I am a keen hiker and love to take in many smells. I also enjoy sitting outside in the backyard just listening to nature — it’s like my version of watching the sunset.

True to my German Shepherd roots, I’m loyal, protective, and a little mischievous. I can open some doors and investigate things left within reach (curiosity is a gift, right?) but am not destructive. I love belly rubs and sometimes gently mouth your arm when I’m happy. I even know how to play soccer — I have my own non-deflatable ball — and I’m always up for a squeaky rubber toy. I’ve carefully mapped my foster home and can confidently roam free when my humans are away.

Now for the honest stuff: I’m dog-reactive, so I need my space from other pups when on walks, although I am quickly learning pattern games to help me pay close attention to my human walker. I also sometimes bark at sounds humans don’t even notice — my super hearing keeps me on guard and anxious. I need someone patient who understands my need to feel secure.

My dream home?
·       Few stairs
·       A quiet suburban or country setting (city life isn’t my style)
·       An active person
·       Someone who works from home or is home often
·       A stable, predictable routine
·       No other pets
·       A person who knows and loves the German Shepherd breed
·       A big, fenced yard

Most of all, I need someone who sees beyond my blindness and recognizes the remarkable, resilient dog that I am. If you have experience with special needs dogs and the heart to help me continue my journey, I would love to meet you.

Please call the shelter or email my foster coordinator at Dogfoster@MaxFund.org to set up a visit. I may not see you when you walk into the room… but I promise, I’ll know you’re there — and I’ll love you with everything I’ve got. 🐾
